Moving Checklist

Checklist Tips

It is no secret that moving can be very stressful. There are a lot of things involved when moving which can make this overwhelming, from packing your household items to loading and unloading them and cleaning the new house. Fortunately, you can make this task less stressful by knowing what is required of you in advance. In this post, we give you a checklist for moving that will put your mind at ease and make the entire moving process simpler. Keep on reading this post to explore it.

1. Set a Date

This is the first thing you should do when planning to move and the first item on your checklist for moving. Until you confirm the date for the big move, it will be quite tricky for everything else to fall into place. Setting a date gives allows you to plan everything at the right time such as ensuring that all your items are properly packed and the house you are moving into is clean.

2. Inform Your Landlord

After setting the date of your big move, you need to inform your landlord. You can tell them the specific date you are going to move out of the property. This makes it one of the first things you need to do when moving house. Ideally, your moving date should be the same date your lease is ending. That way, you will not have to pay rent for multiple places at the same time.

3. Get Quotes From Moving Companies

As mentioned above, moving houses can be overwhelming; that’s why you need someone who can help you pack, transport, and unpack your items. And this is where the advantages of a moving company lies. They will ensure that your items are properly packed, safely transported to your new home, and help unload and unpack them.

Get quotes from at least three different moving companies and see which one charges the most reasonable prices. But remember not to focus on price too much if you want excellent services.

4. Update Your Address

Generally, your address is connected to so many aspects of your life, from maintaining subscriptions and loyalty programs to forwarding your mail to banks, insurance, and so much more. This is why it is crucial to update your address. This way, you will be able to continue with your life as normal.

5. Update Your Drivers License

It is also crucial to update your car affairs as soon as possible. You should update your drivers license so that it shows the correct address.  You can easily do this online.

6. Schedule a Thorough Cleaning

Before you move your new items into your new house, you must clean every corner of the house. Chances are that the previous owner or tenant did not clean it thoroughly when moving out. This is why you need to schedule a cleaning company to come and clean the house to your standards.

7. Connect TV and Internet

Of course, you wouldn’t like the idea of moving into a dead zone. This is why you should ensure that the house has essential items before you move in, by setting up services that will make your life more comfortable. You need to do your research and compare the prices of service providers within your new home to see which ones suit your needs and budget.

You should arrange for installation at least two weeks before you move in to ensure that your services are activated on time.

8. Take a Final Meter Reading

Many people usually fail to do this – a mistake that can cost them a substantial amount of money. Be sure to include this on your checklist for moving. Before you leave your old home, you need to take gas, water, and electricity meter readings. The best way is to take a photo of the meter. If you don’t do this, you may end up being billed for someone else’s usage. Of course, you wouldn’t want that. This is why you must take the meter readings before you move out of your old house.

9. Update Everyone Else

Before you move out of your old house, you need to notify your friends and family about your move. This way, they won’t worry about your whereabouts. You should also notify companies that send you deliveries regularly, such as magazines, newspapers, medicine, etc.  You should also notify your employer about your move.

10. Move Into Your New Home

Once you have done all the things mentioned above, you are now ready to move into your new home. You will contact the moving company you have chosen to come and help you pack your items and carry them to your new home. Once you have unpacked and arranged your items, you can start enjoying your new place.
