Moving into a new house tips

Moving into a new house soon? That’s exciting! Here are 5 tips you need to consider when moving into a new house to have a successful move!

No matter what city you’re choosing to migrate to, the process is still the same. There are always specific things you have to do to be ready for your relocation.

And yet, you’re still going to stand there looking at your house, wondering what you forgot. That is unless you have put together a checklist for moving into a new house.

Things to Do When Moving Into a New House

Research new housing: check. Put your old house on the market: check. Here are five more things to do when moving into a new house.

1. Changing the Locks on Your New Home

Did you know that changing the locks on your new house is a fundamental step to ensuring safety? It doesn’t always feel like it, but you must change them. Keeping existing locks and keys the same means you’ll be taking a risk.

How much do you trust the homeowners to not have made copies? Or, more likely, friends and neighbors of the previous homeowners?

2. Packing Materials

So, you already know where to get your boxes and wrapping paper and you’re ready to pack. But isn’t moving to a new home expensive enough? Why should you have to pay for loads of boxes and materials?

The truth is, moving doesn’t have to include expensive items. You can find free boxes all over the place. And what are you supposed to wrap breakables with if you don’t go buy tons of paper from the store? Old towels or newspaper make for perfect protection of fragile items.

3. Address Change and Utilities

It’s always a good idea to start your change of address with the post office a week before you move. Once you finalize on your home, you’ll have the address on hand. The process is easy and fast, especially when you do it online with the post office.

Also, when you’re ready to move, you should start changing utilities. You shouldn’t wait until the last minute or else you might not have electricity on move-in day. Let them know your moving date, address, and new payment options.

4. Take Measurements

If you’re able, take some time to measure your new home. Why would you do this? It’s important to know how well your current furniture will fit into rooms before the move-in day. It wouldn’t be fun for your moving services to be adjusting furniture over and over while you wing it.

5. Research Moving Allowances

Before the moving truck pulls up in front of your home, you’ll want to do some research.

You need to know all the basics, including what you’re allowed to move through them and what you’re not. This is critical to know beforehand because it will save you all some time.
