You need to take good care of the drains and pipes in your home. They may not seem important, but if something does happen to them, it can cause a big mess that takes a lot of time to clean up and can cost you a lot of money. Too many homeowners rely on the idea of just pouring some Drain-O or other similar item down the drain to help. This may clear out some of the blockage, but the chemicals can tear into the pipes and may erode them really fast.

Finding some safe and effective ways to keep the drains clean can make a big difference. When you use these, you get the benefit of handling all of the clog, without the worry that you are causing some irreparable damage to the pipes at the same time. Let’s take a closer look at some of the safe methods you can use to help keep the trains clean.

Simple Methods to Clean Out Your Drains

You use your pipes all the time. You put water down them, and sometimes other items that probably do not belong. When they get clogged, you can feel frustrated and will want to find a simple solution to clean them up, without causing more damage or having to call in the professionals to help. The good news is, if you catch the problem early enough, you will be able to find some simple solutions that will clear out the drains quite a bit.

Use a DIY Cleaning Solution

It is much better to use your own cleaner rather than some of the chemicals at the store. This one is going to use a bit of salt, about one tablespoon or a little more mixed together with ¼ cup of plain white vinegar. You can pour this down the drain and allow it some time to sit. An hour is usually good, though you can go for longer if the clog is really big. When that time is done, run some hot water through the pipes to loosen up the substance. You may need to do this two times to really clean up the area without causing damage.

Maintain the Clean Pipes

After you have done the salt cleaning solution above, you need to make sure that the drain is kept clean the whole time so that you do not get a clog down the line. A good way to maintain the clean pipe sis to pour just a small amount of bleach into the sink on occasion. Let it sit for an hour or longer and then run some hot water down the drain to clean it out.

Clean Out the Grease Clogs

You need to be careful about what you pour down the sink. Grease may seem like a great option to pour down there, but often the clogs that happen in the kitchen happen because you poured some grease down there. A good place to start to release the grease clog is to pour down some liquid dish soap and a ton of boiling water. Just heat the water on the stove until it is boiling and squirt a minimum of a tablespoon of dish liquid into the drain, followed by a little boiling water at a time.

Note here that you need to be slow with the boiling water. You need to give the grease some time to react with the soap and the water and if you pour it down too quickly, this is going to be impossible. You may need to repeat the process a few times to ensure that the big grease clog is not going to be in the way and cause you more problems down the line.

Why Should I Keep My Drains Clean?

One question that a lot of homeowners will want to know about is why they need to keep the drains in the home so clean? Would it make that big of a difference if they just ignored the drains and didn’t do anything with them at all? There are a few issues that can happen when the build up within the pipes start to get too much. They can cause some damage to the plumbing and even harm your health. Some of the issues that pop up with dirty drains, especially if they are ignored for a long time include:

# Health issues: When you have a blocked drain, it can cause some issues with your health. The bacteria and microbes that are left there can cause mold to grow, irritating those who have asthma.

# Structural damage: Clogging is going to weaken the structural integrity of the pipes and can cause them to break down or start to leak. It is possible that flooding can happen which will warp floorboards and cause wall supports to rot too.

# Pests: Stagnant water is going to be wonderful if you would like to attract a number of pests into the home like the drain fly and the mosquito. This can be bad for your health as well.

Clogged drains are going to be an issue that happens often and we need to deal with it all the time. When you choose to ignore this issue and do not care for your pipes, the problem will just get worse and will end up being expensive. Make sure that you take good care of your plumbing so that it can last a long time and address a clog in the drain as soon as you notice it is a problem.
