Are you planning to move for a change of lifestyle and scenery, career advancement, or education opportunities? Moving should be exciting. Sadly, many people regret it. According to Anytime Estimate’s survey findings shared on Yahoo, 70% of people in the US regret moving, with 8% reporting missing items as one of their regrets. Between packing, transporting, and unloading, chances are items will be misplaced. However, there are things you can do to keep items on the move organized and easy to track. Tagging your property. This process is more like giving each item a unique name tag. When belongings have labels or tags are attached, they can be identified and tracked easily, reducing stress and saving time searching for them. This post explores tips for tagging personal items when moving to a new area, ensuring you track the location and conditions of valuables.

metal Tagging

People are quick to pick paper or plastic labels because they’re readily available. Unfortunately, they fade and tear quickly, meaning items, especially those being moved long distant and in harsh weather, can lose their unique identification. Blank metal asset tags are your best option, as they withstand UV exposure, extreme temperatures, scratches, chemicals, and rough handling during loading and unloading. Other benefits of using metal tags, especially blank ones, include easy customization and discretion. For instance, you can engrave details of the item, a number code, or your name with an engraving pen.

Even better, you can apply barcodes and RFID technology to enhance equipment tracking and accuracy of your moving inventory. Blank metal tags can also add security to items while being discreet. Say you label your tag with a number code like 13, which on your master list means ‘laptop bag’. It’s difficult for strangers to tell what’s inside. QR codes and barcodes on metal tags, are also discreet as they don’t reveal what’s inside a package. You’ll have to scan a barcode or quick response (QR) code with their paired mobile app.

Categorize And Label Items

Packing for a big move can be overwhelming. How do you pack valuables to ensure they don’t break or get lost in the pressure of relocating? The trick is to classify items and label them. You’ll not only save time and reduce stress, but minimize the risk of damaging and losing items as well. Classification can be done by room, item name, fragility, owner, and item type. For instance, pack kitchen items together or clothing and beddings in the same boxes. Beyond classifying belongings and labeling by room or fragility, assign each box a metal tag with a unique identifiable number.

Instead of engraving number codes on metal labels, use digital codes (barcodes and QR codes). With barcodes, you can track items in real-time using your phone, which increases visibility and security. For tagging to work, create a scannable digital inventory, which links each barcode to a list of info like contents in boxes, the owner, and level of fragility. For example, barcode 002 could be attached to box 14, which contains your favorite dinnerware. Use a scanning app for barcodes to monitor items throughout the move to storage

Apply Tags Uniformly

It’s tempting to combine color codes, number codes, and QR or barcodes when tagging property. Inconsistency, using different identification codes, forgetting to update your inventory, and skipping boxes cause confusion. It defeats the purpose of keeping your items in check, preventing loss. Consider this: all your boxes have metal tags with barcodes. You don’t have to open them to know what’s inside. But if some boxes don’t have tags, you’ll spend hours searching through them all. If unmarked boxes get misplaced during the move, tracking them becomes difficult.

Losing belongings- your favorite dinner set, kids’ toys, book, or expensive gadget when moving is frustrating. And replacing them can be costly. Tagging guarantees that your valuables stay safe throughout transit, storage, and unpacking. This process requires careful planning, though. Buy long-lasting labels like metal tags. Then choose a tracking method (barcodes, RFIDs, and QR codes), classify belongings and labels, and ensure consistency.
