moving to New Hartford

Nineteen miles northwest of Hartford, the capital of Connecticut, lies a town considered one of the best places to live. It’s called New Hartford. While they share a name, these two cities couldn’t be any more different.  While Hartford is the center of a metropolitan area of over 120,000 people, New Hartford has a small-town appeal with green open spaces.

Dating back to the early 1700s, New Hartford holds on to its historical roots. Several locales are on the National Register of Historic Places, including Pine Meadow Historic District, with homes and churches built in the mid-18th century.

As you drive down the quiet streets with majestic trees, the rolling hills of Litchfield County welcome young and old alike. There is a sense of peace, friendly residents, and any amenities you might need. Great schools, amazing restaurants, delightful shops, and plenty of recreational opportunities exist.

The Neighborhoods

The average home price in New Hartford is just over $410,000. Homes in the area vary from starter homes to spacious homes on the outskirts of town. There are lots for sale in which to build your dream home. The entire area has large trees and an abundance of greenery. Homes are typical New England style with multiple floors, plenty of windows, and traditional spaces.

New Hartford has a population of just under 7,000 people. About 20% of the residents live in New Hartford Center, on the city’s northeast side. This area is in the valley of the West Branch of the Farmington River, one of Connecticut’s longest tributaries that extends into Massachusetts. Head out on Route 44 for an easy commute to the state capital.

Nepaug and Bakerville are on the southern side of the town. They are separate cities close enough to be considered part of the New Hartford area. Nepaug homes tend to be a little more expensive.

If you seek a home in the New Hartford area, you can find unique homes on acres near the forest, along the lake, or in a historic neighborhood. Consider some of the outlying areas as well.

The Schools

New Hartford is a great place to raise a family, and the schools are top-notch. Children start at either New Hartford Elementary or Bakerville School until 2nd grade. Then children from both schools continue at Ann Antolini School until 6th grade. They continue to Northwestern Regional Middle School and Northwestern Regional High School, a single campus located in nearby Winsted.

The Community

New Hartford has a wonderful sense of community. West Hill Pond is a popular gathering place. Two hundred sixty-one acres of water offer beautiful views, hiking trails, boating, and fishing opportunities in the summer and winter. The lake has a boat ramp and parking lot on the north side and a private beach club on the southwest side. The Brodie Park Waterfront is on the east side, where the community gathers for events throughout the year. Each summer, it holds the Litchfield Hills Triathlon, where athletes can test their bodies with a swim, bike, and run a race.  Other amenities include tennis courts, a skate park, a playground, and other sports courts. Birdwatching in the surrounding woods is a popular pastime.

Other parks, lakes, and forests in New Hartford include:

  • Callahan Park is a tiny park with tennis and basketball courts, swings, and a picnic area
  • Chapin Park has war memorials and an ice-skating rink in the winter
  • Brown’s Corner is where kids go for organized athletic competitions, including baseball, softball, soccer, and football.
