Should You Hire Movers?

So, should you move everything yourself or hire a moving company? Here are some things to consider when deciding.

Moving Yourself May Cost Less

Moving by yourself might cost less. The average cost of a local move ranges from $875 to $2,350. Moving a four-bedroom house will run you about $3,200 and more.

. For a state-to-state move the cost is $1,800 to $5,700 and more depending on distance and total weight.

How much will it cost to move yourself?

That depends on how much you have to move. Here are some expenses to consider:

  • Moving Equipment Rental – if you’re moving boxes or small furniture items, you’ll likely need to rent dollies, carts, or hand trucks. You’ll also need blankets, straps, and loading ramps.
  • Moving Truck – you’ll also need to rent a truck. A 10-ft. truck will cost $500 to $1,800 for a local move, while a long-distance rental will cost approx. $2,400 or more, depending on the distance and length of time.
  • Fuel – remember you’ll need to fill up the tank along the way and before you return the truck.
  • Helpers – unless you plan to ask your friends to help you move, you might need to hire people to help to carry the sofa and dining table onto the truck and unload it at the other end. Some companies offer temporary labor, or the rental truck company may offer these services.

By the time you factor in all of these expenses, you may find the savings from doing it yourself aren’t that great.

Moving Yourself Means Extra Stress

This also doesn’t consider the time and stress you’ll incur by having to rent equipment and load everything by yourself. And because you’re not a moving professional, there’s always the chance you might injure yourself or damage your belongings during the move.

When you hire a reputable moving company, you’ll know all of these tasks will be taken care of for you. The movers will be trained to carry your furniture out the door efficiently and reliably. You won’t have to worry about straining your back or denting the wall. Instead, you can think about what life will be like in your new home.

The main drawback of hiring movers is the lack of flexibility. You’re required to work within the moving company’s schedule of when to pick up and deliver your household goods. If the moving company must make multiple deliveries before yours, you might have to wait days or weeks to receive your belongings.

You also have total strangers handling your things. If you hire movers to pack your belongings for you, then you have no control over what goes where. The movers might pack some of your bathroom and living room items together in the same box, simply for efficient use of space. You’ll have a harder time finding everything when you get to the other end.

How About a Hybrid Move?

So, moving by yourself and hiring pros each has advantages and disadvantages. How about a middle ground? With a hybrid move, you do some things yourself and outsource the rest. Many full-service moving companies have different levels of service.

For example, you may pack everything yourself and have the movers load and unload it. Or you may move some items yourself and hire movers to move the others.

A popular option is to work with a moving container company such as PODS. The company delivers a shipping container to your home and gives you several days to load everything inside. The company then transports the container to your new home, where you unload it.

You still have to pay helpers to load and unload your things, but you don’t have the truck rental and gas expenses. Still, a moving container service could cost $1,200 to over $5,000.

Other Things to Consider When Deciding

Here are some other things that will go into your decision whether to do a full-service move, a do-it-yourself move, or a hybrid move.

Distance

It’s more complicated to move long distance than just down the street. If you’re moving within the same neighborhood, you might be able to move most of your items yourself and hire temporary helpers with oversized items.

For a longer move, though, the logistics are more complex. If you’re moving to a new state, there may be regulations regarding what you can bring in and forms to sign. If you’re moving overseas, your belongings will need to clear customs. In that case, it’s best to leave everything to the professionals.

How Much Time You Have

If you’re moving locally and have plenty of time, you can make multiple trips to your new place over a period of days or even weeks and save moving costs. But if you’re on a time crunch, for example if you need to be at your new place at a specific time for work, then you might consider hiring a moving company. They can move your stuff more efficiently.

What You’re Moving

Fragile or large items require special handling that might be too burdensome for non-professionals. Moving an organ from your living room down two flights of stairs is a job for trained professionals with appropriate equipment. And that one-of-a-kind oil painting hanging in your study also requires special packing and shipping.
