Moving your refrigerator, the largest appliance in your home, can seem a daunting task. Since fridges weigh anywhere between 200 and 400 pounds on average, you’ll definitely need someone to help you, whether you hire a professional moving company or enlist a friend. It’s also important to prepare your fridge beforehand, so it stays secure and doesn’t defrost and leak during transit. Fortunately, with careful planning and preparation, you’ll be able to successfully move your appliance to your new home.

Empty and defrost

Your fridge first needs to be emptied before you can move it safely. So, eat what you can in the days and weeks leading up to your move, and throw out anything you can’t take with you on the day. If you’re not moving too far, keeping leftovers in an ice box can preserve them until you get to your new home and prevent needless food waste. Perishable food should be kept at 40°F or colder, so you’ll need to fill the box with plenty of ice. Once your fridge is empty, it can then be defrosted. Unplug the appliance and put towels down on the floor to absorb water as it defrosts. You can also start cleaning it at this point. Use soap and water to wipe down the interiors and leave the doors open overnight to dry.

Take out removable parts

Next, take out all the removable parts, such as, draws, shelves, and trays, wrap them in bubble wrap, and pack them along with the rest of your possessions. This way, they’re not at risk of moving about the fridge and causing damage during transport. It’s also useful to have your refrigerator serviced before your move, particularly if you’ve noticed any problems with it recently. For example, if your fridge has started making strange noises or running colder than it should be, these are both signs it’s not operating efficiently and potentially increasing your utility bills. As a general rule, if your refrigerator’s less than eight years old, it’s usually cheaper to have it repaired rather than to purchase a new one. Professional appliance maintenance can fix any problems, so you can look forward to using a reliable and efficient fridge in your new home.

Loading the fridge into the moving truck

Before moving your fridge, close the door and secure it with a moving strap so it stays shut en-route. You can also wrap the fridge with packing material for extra protection. Then, use a moving dolly to transport the appliance out of your home and onto the moving truck. You’ll need to check there’s a clear route through your home first, and move furniture out the way as needed. Depending on the width of your fridge, you may also need to remove doors to create enough space for it to pass. A ramp should be provided at the truck to help you load the fridge onboard. You can then position it somewhere it’s not likely to fall over.

Moving your fridge properly is essential to get it to your new home in one piece. With careful planning and preparation, you’ll successfully move your fridge without any damage.
