unsealing a moving box

You might consider packing boxes to be a simple and tedious task whereby you place everything in boxes and move them to your new property, but this is not the case. Packing is a methodical task that requires planning in order to make sure that you pack things correctly. It’s simply not a case of dumping your items in any box and hoping for the best. Whether it’s clothing, picture frames or glassware, packing them correctly will ensure that they arrive at your destination in one piece.

Collect The Right Packing Supplies

Whether you opt to order packing supplies from your moving company or you obtain them yourself, you’re going to need the right materials. If possible, if you can find moving boxes then you’re more likely to avoid problems, as these are specially designed for moving and storing fragile items. So, what you’ll need is:

  • Packing tape
  • Labels
  • Boxes
  • Packing paper, bubble wrap or peanuts

Pack Items Based On Category

After you have your first box, you should begin by packing up a small area. So, prior to loading up your box, collect your items that are similar. This could be books, glasses or other items. When you pack based on category you can keep similar items together, which makes it easier to pack and also unpack on the other end.

Of course, the trick here is to still pack room by room. So, if you start with the kitchen, you could pack all breakables such as glasses and crockery, before moving onto other items such as cutlery, pots and pans.

Fill The Box As Much As Possible

When packing boxes with items that are not fragile, you should aim to make sure that the entire box is filled. However, it’s important to remember that the box should not be too heavy to carry. What’s more, if boxes are packed too heavily then they are also at risk of collapsing when stacked or even breaking when moved. If the items are not tightly packed here’s an idea. Then, you can place packing paper in the box to ensure that items do not move around during transit.

For boxes that contain fragile items, you will need to take a more considered approach. You’re going to need to place about two inches of packing materials around the inside of the box. Make sure items are placed tightly but not too tight because you can fill the gaps with peanuts or you can even choose to bubble wrap each item if you need to.

Spend Time Wrapping Fragile Items

If items are fragile or valuable then you’re going to need to make sure that they are appropriately packed. This is to make sure they cannot move around and they are able to deal with the moving and stacking that comes with transporting them. So, take time to wrap them each individually. This is a time-consuming task but one that is worth doing well, because it could save a lot of hassle and mess when it comes to unpacking. Wrap items in bubble wrap, use packing paper, and fill any gaps with packing peanuts. Make sure you place dishes and plates into boxes on their side and never flat. Likewise, if you do choose to stack cups and bowls make sure you place padding in between them. Avoid leaving gaps – this is a hard and fast rule to follow!

Packing glasses can prove challenging, and this is why you need to invest in the correct boxes. If you opt for boxes that have dividers, you will have a simple solution that will ensure your glasses and cannot move around. They provide an additional layer of protection and they are available in a variety of sizes. However, don’t think that they are enough on their own to provide protection. You’ll still need to make sure the glasses are wrapped correctly with bubble wrap.

It’s Time To Seal Your Boxes

Sealing your boxes is just as important is packing them because they need to be securely sealed. Without correct sealing, they can open and items can fall out. Therefore, you’re going to need strong packing tape. Also, you should make sure you tape the flaps of the box first to make a cross with the tape, before sealing across the top. This will help to prevent the box from collapsing when stacked and it will ensure that your belongings remain inside.

Finally, you should make sure that every box is clearly labelled with the room and content that it contains. This will help your moving company but also make it easier to unpack when it comes to settling into your new home.

So, packing is a process that takes time and preparation, but get it right and everything will go to plan.
