You don’t want your hot tub to be unsafe. Nothing will ruin your relaxing dip like having to take a trip to the hospital. From preventing slips and falls to maintaining water cleanliness, these steps will help you make sure every soak in your hot tub is perfectly safe.

Prevent Slips and Falls

The ground around your hot tub will get slick with water, which means it’s a major risk for slips and falls. This risk is increased in the winter months when you decide to shake off the chilly weather and heat up in the tub. The ground could be covered in snow and ice.

Falls are no laughing matter. According to the CDC, about one million older adults are hospitalized because of fall injuries every single year. You don’t want to be a part of that statistic.

So, what can you do to prevent slips and falls?

Use Outdoor Shoes

While it will be tempting to slip out to the hot tub in your bare feet, you should really wear a pair of outdoor shoes with treads on the bottom. Treaded soles create more traction, so you’ll be able to stay upright on slippery surfaces.

Bring Housecoats and Towels

Other than shoes, you should bring accessories like housecoats and bath towels every time you go to the hot tub. Use these to dry off the moment that you step out of the tub. You’re more likely to slip on your walk back to the house when you’re soaking wet.

Get Hot Tub Stairs

Don’t heave yourself over the edge of the hot tub when you’re getting in or getting out of the water. You could easily lose your footing and injure yourself. Get a set of stairs for your hot tub so that you can safely move in and out of the tub.

Add Outdoor Mats

Place non-slip mats around your hot tub. A non-slip mat will give you a secure place to step before you’ve fully toweled off.

Keep The Water Clean

Dirty hot tub water can make you sick. Soaking in unclean water can lead to hot tub folliculitis, swimmer’s ear, and other unpleasant infections. You’ll want to take precautions to ensure that your water is always clean.

Cover the Tub

Start by getting a durable hot tub cover that’s designed for your needs. Go to The Cover Guy to get the cover that best matches your local climate. A Standard Cover will suit warm to moderate climates. A Deluxe Cover will suit moderate to cold climates. An Extreme Cover is designed to handle the coldest and harshest climates so that cold, ice, and snow don’t ruin your hot tub.

Hot tub covers will prevent outside debris, insects, and critters from getting inside your tub water. Keep the cover on whenever the tub isn’t in use.

Sanitize Your Water

Clean the interior of your tub. If you’ve left your tub alone for too long, and the water is dirty, you can use spa shock treatment to kill algae, bacteria, and harmful pathogens inside. Otherwise, routinely sanitize the water with chlorine or bromine. These chemicals will destroy germs and algae, making your water safe and sparkling.

Follow these steps to make your hot tub safer — and by extension, your soaks in the tub safer. You won’t have to worry about slipping on a wet deck and wiping out, or about contracting a horrible rash after getting into dirty water. You can just sit back in the steamy water and relax.
