Move Your Furniture

People dream of living in New York City, and there are many dream homes all over the five boroughs. You are ready to hand in your rental application form, then you remember, you have to get all your stuff from point A to point B.

Moving is stressful, even if you’re not moving far, however, can you imagine making a move to another location in New York City? Fuhgeddaboudit. Remember, you have to pack all of your belongings, move them, and then unpack them in your new home.

Moving is difficult, but you can also help yourself move some of your furniture with the help of the NYC subway system. Sometimes the subway can be an unreliable and frustrating mode of transport. But if you know the ins and outs of the subway, it could give you a real hand.  Keep reading the article to learn how the subway can make your move a bit easier.

1. Ask for Help

Always ask for help. If you’re moving to a new apartment, it’s okay to reach out to friends or family members and ask them if they have time to help move your furniture. Tell them where you’re moving and what size/weight the furniture is, so they can prepare accordingly.

You may need to carry some mid-sized furniture, and it’s always good to have both mental and physical support. You don’t want to be carrying a small table down subway station stairs yourself.

If you’re moving to NYC for the first time, you may still need to make a subway trip or two. In either case, it’s a good idea to tell the station worker what day and time you’ll arrive at the train station with all of your stuff.

That way, they can open the large door for you, so you can avoid needing to pass through the turnstiles.

2. Avoid Using the Bus

As far as public transportation goes, the buses in NYC are great for getting from one place to another. However, the bus isn’t the best way to move your furniture.

Unless you are traveling at a time when you are sure almost no one else will be on the bus, you should opt for the subway.

The bus fills up much faster than the subway, so you’ll most likely be in an uncomfortable position if you’re on the bus with anything other than one suitcase, bookbag, or another smaller item

3. Avoid Rush Hour

If you can help it, avoid moving your furniture during the morning and evening rush hours. Not only will these times be the most crowded, but they’ll also be the most hectic for everyone involved, including other passengers.

Make sure that you plan ahead if you choose to move around during rush hour. That way, if anything goes wrong during transport (like an extended wait between rides), you won’t have much trouble getting to your new place too late.

4. Don’t Take Anything Too Large

When moving your furniture using the New York City subway, it’s best to avoid larger pieces of furniture like sofas, tables, and dressers.

These items can be difficult to transport and will be nearly impossible to ensure that they remain completely intact.

If you need to carry these types of things through the subway stations, we recommend hiring a professional moving company with trucks instead of trying to maneuver larger items on your own through the subway.

5. Be careful in Bad Weather

New York City is one of the most amazing cities in the world. However, we often forget how horrible the weather can be, especially during winter.

Keep the following in mind if you see that the weather will be less than favorable when you plan on moving your belongings.

  • When it rains, the subway gets slippery. Move carefully so you don’t slip and fall down the stairs.
  • If it rains a lot, be aware that the subway may flood if a storm comes through later in the day and there isn’t enough time to pump out all the water from underground.
  • Don’t let rain or snow damage your furniture or other items. Make sure your belongings are safe from getting wet by wrapping them tightly with plastic wrap or putting them in bags.

Moving is a stressful experience, but it doesn’t have to be as difficult as you think, even when using the NYC transportation system. There are plenty of ways to make moving easier on yourself and your belongings, from packing strategically to enlisting friends and family.
