Moving Precious Items

Moving to a new home can require a great deal of planning. Not only do you need to pack all your possessions and clean your house, you must also navigate the logistics of moving your items from one location to another.

While challenging enough with furniture, it can sometimes be even harder when you have precious items you want to protect at all costs. If the time has come to plan a move, keep these tips in mind for moving anything of great value:

Use Dedicated Couriers for High-Value Items

If you have high-value items you don’t trust to be put in with a regular moving service, use a dedicated courier service with experience moving items of high value. For example, if you’re moving gold, the precious metal specialist Oxford Gold Group recommends using registered mail through the U.S. Postal Service and other trusted courier services and armored car services.

With registered mail, in particular, your items will be manually processed with supervision to ensure they get to their final destination without tampering. This service also typically comes with an option to purchase up to $50,000 of insurance coverage.

Purchase Quality Packing Materials

If you plan to move your precious items yourself or with a trusted moving company, ensure you purchase quality packing materials. Packing paper, packing peanuts, and bubble wrap within sturdy boxes may improve the chances of your precious goods making it to your new home unscathed. Wrap all fragile items individually with multiple layers of packing materials for extra protection.

Reinforce Your Boxes

It’s easy to assume that one piece of tape on each seam is enough to keep your goods safe and secure in a moving box. However, you can never be too careful, especially with heavy items. Consider using extra packing tape along all seams, the bottoms, and the sides of the boxes for additional protection.

Buy Strong Boxes

Regular moving boxes are more than suitable for household goods, but that doesn’t mean they’ll be suitable for extra fragile or precious items. While more expensive, there can be value in buying double-walled boxes with handles. The double walling adds additional protection and strength, while the handles make them easier to carry. You may then reduce the risk of them being dropped.

Take Them With You

It’s only natural to feel stressed about packing expensive, precious, or sentimental items into boxes to go with your chosen moving company. While they’re professionals and strive to look after your items, you can’t help but feel nervous about being unable to see and be near anything of great value.

If it means you’ll enjoy more peace of mind, take precious items with you. Just ensure that if you’re driving to a new home that requires an overnight stay in a hotel or motel, you don’t leave those special items in your vehicle.

Check Your Insurance

You likely already have special insurance for your high-value items, but check your policy before you relocate them. There’s a chance your standard policy doesn’t provide protection while you’re moving. If it doesn’t, you may be able to purchase an additional moving insurance policy as a just-in-case measure.

Moving precious items can be a nerve-wracking experience when you’re worried about them being damaged or lost. Take some of the actions above, and you might enjoy peace of mind knowing they’re as protected as they can be for the big move.
