Moving Day Tips To Facilitate Tenants’ Job

Moving from one home to another is not an easy task. On the contrary, it takes a lot of forethought and planning as so many things can go wrong. However, following proper move-in procedures can significantly curb the hassle.

Stick around to discover 7 valuable tips for tenants on moving day

1. Double-check the move-in date

First and foremost, you need to double-check the move-in date. Moving into a new home can be a lot of work and requires the cooperation of multiple people. That is if your belongings can fit into more than one backpack. You should also ensure that you’ve communicated the correct date to other parties involved in the moving process.

For instance, your new landlord has to know when you’re coming so they make the proper provisions for your arrival. You also have to ensure the moving company you hired is ready to go. Ideally, you ought to discuss these matters weeks before your move-in day, but it doesn’t hurt to double-check and make sure everything is in place.

2. Reach out to your former landlord

It’s customary to give your landlord prior notice before you move. Doing so gives them enough time to look for a new tenant and fill up the vacancy you will inevitably be leaving behind. The ideal time frame to notify your landlord is usually 60 – 90 days, but it would be best to check your lease. Most landlord-tenant agreements stipulate how many days notice each party gives before terminating the arrangement.

Assuming you’re moving out the day you’re moving to your new apartment, it’s proper étiquette to reach out to your former landlord. Let them know that the unit is now vacant and where you’ve dropped the keys. You can also discuss other ways each party can be of assistance.

3. Pack an overnight bag

On move-in day, likely, all your belongings are securely packed and taped shut inboxes. While that’s great, it can become an annoying chore when you get to your new place and have to start digging through everything for the essentials. Despite grouping similar items, it would be best you packed a separate overnight bag.

This bag should contain items you might need, such as your toothbrush, gadgets, a change of clothes, medication, and so on. Of course, you don’t have to restrict your overnight bag to personal items. You should also include kitchen utensils, coffee, drinking water, snacks, and other things you might use to keep your energy levels up.

4. Do a quick sweep of your old apartment

Finally, once you’re all packed and ready to do a quick sweep of your old apartment, this final check is essential because it prevents you from forgetting anything you need. Look through every part of the house, under the furniture, and inside your appliances.

For example, you might have left something in the dryer last minute or forgotten an energy drink in the fridge. Apart from looking for your items, you should also complete some last-minute tasks. Take out the trash, switch off the lights, and finally lock up the house.

5. Contact your new landlord

As we highlighted in the first point, you must double-check that everyone is on board. After all, the last thing you want to go through is the pain of packing and transporting your belongings only to find the door locked. Granted, your movers will do most of the heavy lifting. But it could still put a snag in your day.

Besides handing you the keys to your new place, you might also want to reach out to your new landlord to finalize some details. For example, there might be some paperwork you need to fill out during the move-in inspection.

6. Update your new address with USPS

Once you’ve gotten to your new place, don’t forget to update your new address with the USPS. This update ensures that the postal services send any package you might receive to your new address. It’s a step many people often forget, and they might end up having to travel long distances to get their delivery. That’s if the new tenants in your previous home are generous enough to keep it for you. So save yourself the hassle and take a couple of minutes to change your address on the USPS site.

Although you don’t have to do it on move-in day, it’s a good idea also to update your address on other platforms. Bank accounts, credit records, newspaper subscriptions, and even close family and friends need to be aware of the change.

7. Clean your new apartment

Finally, after completing the other steps, you can settle down to clean your new apartment. It’s a good idea to have all your cleaning supplies handy. That way, you don’t have to rummage through several boxes looking for the cleaning detergent after finding the sponge in a different one. However, cleaning an entire unit in a single day might be an impossible task. So feel free to outsource the job to a professional cleaner.
