protect your smart home

If you’re planning a trip near or far anytime soon, you may be tempted just to pack your bags and hit the road. While that might seem like a fun adventure, your house might require a bit of safeguarding while you’re off having fun somewhere beautiful.

Secure Your Home When on Vacation

If this is your first big vacation after buying a house, or you’re simply curious about what you can do to ensure your home’s safety during a particularly long trip, you’re in luck. There are plenty of things you can rely on to protect your home from while you’re away.

Whether your top priority is keeping your valuables safe or keeping your bills to a minimum while you’re away, all it takes is a few simple steps to keep everything locked down tight.

Here’s how you can protect your home while you’re away on vacation.

1. Lock Doors and Windows

This one is pretty obvious, but it needs to be said! Make sure you double-check all of your locks before you leave, including your windows. Doing this can protect your home against burglars and intruders so you can rest easy.

2. Use Smart Lights

It’s not very efficient to leave your lights on the whole time you’re gone to create a human presence.

However, if you want to mimic human activity while you’re away, you can put your lights on a timer or use smart lighting systems in your home to turn them on for just a few hours each day. That way, break-ins will become less likely.

3. Lock Up Valuables

If someone does break into your house, your valuables should be hard to find. Locking them up in a safe or lockbox somewhere that isn’t easy to find is likely the best option when it comes to keeping them safe.

4. Shut Off the Water

Pipe emergencies can happen at any time — don’t let it be while you’re trying to enjoy a trip. If you’re going away for an extended period, shut off your water to prevent accidents like burst pipes and flooding. You can work with your water company to set up the exact dates you plan to shut off your water.

5. Hire a House Sitter

While it might not be necessary for everyone, some people might fare best by hiring a house sitter while they’re gone. If you plan to go away for a long time and have plants that need watering or fish that need feeding, you can hire someone to take care of things while you’re gone. This can create a human presence, too.

6. Avoid Posting Your Whereabouts

This one might be hard in the digital age, but it can be quite helpful. Of course, most people want to believe that their friends and followers would never break into their homes. But you never know who could be keeping an eye on your online behavior.

If you’re worried about people using their knowledge of your whereabouts to their advantage, maybe save the beach photos for when you get home.

7. Set Up a Security System

If you don’t already have a home security system, now could be a great time to start building one. There are plenty of smart home security systems that send alerts to your cell phone and even allow you to view security camera footage from anywhere. With modern technology like this, you can ensure nothing gets past you.

Protecting Your Home While You’re Away

Whether you’re going away for a week or a whole season, taking care of your home in your absence is just as important as ever. From locking your doors to putting some lights on a timer, there are so many ways you can protect your home, even from afar.
